Sonics AS-337 #2
I bought this pair from an old Army vet. The wood is nice, but scratched and has a few deep scratches.
This is a 3-way sealed speaker system with 5 drivers. Woofer is 10" in diameter.
The Sonics brand was made in Japan in the 1970's and sold in American military exchanges.
Problems discovered:
One horn tweeter was missing
Sound was very muddy and flat
Some deep scratches in the finish, too deep to fully repair.
Original lattice grills were removed. The fabric was kept and in excellent condition.
Restoration:
Cleaned all dust
Removed tape and most stains
Replaced the crossovers. I left the original crossovers in place, in case a future owner wants a 100% original restoration. As a result, the 3 buttons on the control panel are not functional.
Replaced the missing horn tweeter
Listening test: very satisfactory
Electronic test: satisfactory: see FR report below
Touched up and polished the finish.
Sound is good; the audiophile will find it a little weak from 50 Hz to 100 Hz but easily corrected with equalization.
